Event Information
Description:
When the MDF at ORNL sets a bold goal — such as 3D printing the Strati electric car live at IMTS 2014 — they call it a moonshot. IMTS Spark will witness a moonshot that can change the trajectory of the U.S. machine tool industry. The “launching pad” of this effort is a 3D printed machine tool base with increased damping when compared to traditional castings. In the first episode, the polymer mold printing using the BAAM system and the subsequent concrete fill are described. Videos of both operations are provided. The use of embedded sensors is demonstrated to show: 1) the concrete temperature during curing outdoors and after transition to a temperature-controlled high bay; and 2) the base vibration response to an external hammer impact. Watch the four-part ETC Talk show series.
