Description:

When the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) sets a bold goal — such as 3D printing the Strati electric car live at IMTS 2014 — they call it a moonshot. IMTS spark will witness a moonshot that can change the trajectory of the U.S. machine tool industry. The “launching pad” of this effort is a 3D printed machine tool base with damping that is an order of magnitude higher than traditional castings.

In the second episode, modal testing is completed using an instrumented hammer to excite the base and an accelerometer to record the corresponding vibration. This impact testing approach is used to identify the frequency response functions, or FRFs, for the polymer mold-concrete filled base. The FRFs are then analyzed to determine the: natural frequencies, modal stiffness values, modal damping ratios, and mode shapes. The concrete base damping ratios are compared to cast iron to demonstrate the increased energy dissipation for the concrete base.
